RNG Crowned Champions of LPL 2021 Spring Split

This weekend we saw RNG (Royal Never Give Up) get crowned as champions of the LPL 2021 Spring Split. Here is how it all went down:

RNG Crowned Champions of LPL 2021 Spring SplitHow did they do it?

Group Stage

Looking onto the group stage, RNG were the most dominant team out of all 17 teams. During these 10 weeks, Royal Never Give Up won 14 matches, and only lost 2 matches against Bilibili Gaming and JD Gaming. They finished first in the regular season, just above EDward Gaming.

Playoffs

Due to their result in the group stage, RNG had a huge advantage in the bracket. This is because they were placed in the first round of the upper bracket. Unfortunately they lost their first matchup against 2019 World Champions FPX, and dropped into the losers bracket. Here they played versus Top Esports, and after a grueling series, RNG came out on top, winning 3-2. Next up was EDG, after losing to FPX they also dropped to the lower bracket. RNG won the first 2 games, EDG replied with 2 of their own, and in the final match, RNG closed it out with intense teamwork during team fights.

Grand Finals

This win placed them into the Grand Finals where they rematched the team that brought them down in the first place. FPX opened up the finals with a huge game in their favour, grabbing the edge in their series. RNG motivated themselves with this first loss and went through with winning the next 3 matches of the series. GALA was key for these victories, as he helped RNG gain the advantage almost immediately in every game.

Ranking LoL Viewership – Regional Rumble

Here at esportsguide we’re keeping things fresh with a new series called ‘Regional Rumble’. Specifically, in this series we’ll be comparing statistics of esports across regions to confirm where the top dogs lie. In this inaugural episode, we’ll be diving into the recent Spring Playoffs events – let’s compare LoL Viewership!

LoL Viewership – LCK and LEC Dominating

As a note, do bear in mind that viewership isn’t everything. Yes, it’s a big piece of an esport, but it doesn’t account for other aspects. In this comparison/ranking, we’ll be strictly listing the statistics from the recent Spring Playoffs – including the entire season and the final games – thanks to Esports Charts!

Without further delay, here are the figures:

  1. LCK Spring 2021 – 836,062 Peak, 232,239 Average
  2. LEC Spring 2021 – 831,198 Peak, 309,958 Average
  3. LCS Spring 2021 – 415,731 Peak, 176,012 Average
  4. LPL Spring 2021 – 272,306 Peak, 38,612 Average
  5. PCS Spring 2021 – 54,773 Peak, 17,300 Average
  6. LCL Spring 2021 – 44,944 Peak, 14,871 Average

In bold, I’ve highlighted our top 2 regions for viewership. Indeed, having the LCK on top is no surprise to anybody. However, I’m pleasantly surprised to see how close LEC sit behind them, with an even higher average viewership.

It’s also here that the LCS is heavily trailing – definitely some work to do. While we haven’t including every single league in the world (as that would be insane) the remaining leagues such as the PCS and LCL help provide insight on how lower tiers are performing.

And that’s it really – we hope to continue this series across many esports!

New League Of Legends Champion Gwen, the Hallowed Seamstress

A New League of Legends Champion has been revealed, by the name of Gwen, the Hallowed Seamstress. In this article we’ll be going through some of her basic abilities, and how she can impact the current pace of League Of Legends.

Abilities for New League Of Legends Champion Gwen

Passive – Thousand Cuts:

Gwen’s passive allows her basic attacks to deal bonus on-hit magic damage based on a percentage of her health. The Basic attacks against champions will heal her for some of the damage dealt.

Q – Snip Snip:

Gwen rapidly snips her scissors, dealing magic damage in a cone. Gwen will snip twice, adding one snip per basic attack landed on an enemy. Enemies that are in the center of each snip take true damage, as well as the bonus magic damage from Thousand Cuts.

W – Hallowed Mist:

Gwen spins up the Hallowed Mist and surrounds herself for 5 seconds, gaining armor and magic resistance. Enemies outside of the Mist cannot target her or hit her with any abilities. The mist will follow her the first time she tries to leave it, but will dissipate next time.

E – Skip ’n Slash:

Gwen dashes a short distance and empowers her attacks with increased range, speed, and on-hit magic damage for four seconds. Attacking an enemy during the time of the ability, refunds 50% of this ability’s cooldown.

R – Needlework:

Gwen’s ultimate ability allows her to cast Needlework 3 times. But, she needs to hit an enemy within 8 seconds to unlock subsequent casts, dealing magic damage, slowing enemies, and applying Thousand Cuts. The first cast fires just 1 needle, the second fires 3 and the final fires 5.

Here’s a short video, meshing all of her abilities:

How will she impact the current champion pool?

Just from looking at her abilities we can already feel that she’s going to be one of the most looked at Assassins in the 2021 meta. She has a very similar playstyle to Irelia, Fiora, and Camille, and will certainly be challenging one of those champions in the Top lane.

LCS 2021 Mid-Season Showdown – Cloud9 At the Top

League of Legends in the North American region has been a rather one-sided affair. Indeed, Cloud9 continues to dominate the region. Accordingly, this continued at the LCS 2021 Mid-Season Showdown where they managed to stay on top! Read on for a quick and concise esportsguide recap!

LCS 2021 Mid-Season Showdown – Cloud9’s Journey

With $200,000 on the line, the top 10 seeds from the regular season made their way to this event. Running from 5th February up to April 11th a day ago, it all kicked off with the seeds. It was clear that Team Liquid, TSM or Cloud9 would claim the title, with all of them coming off winning streaks in the regular season.

Here’s how the double bracket boiled down, with a focus on Cloud9’s journey to victory:

Naturally, the highlight game would have to be the Grand Finals. With Team Liquid taking the first game and Cloud9 quickly responding – the scoreline then sat at 2-1 for Team Liquid. While on matchpoint, Cloud9 clawed their way out of a hole and won two maps in a row.

Cloud9 managed to do so with the help of MVP ‘Perkz’ who came to play in the Grand Finals!

Can anyone take down Cloud9 in the next stage? Besides that, do Cloud9 have a chance at the MSI Invitational 2021?

LEC Spring Playoffs 2021 Recap – MAD Lions are Kings of the Jungle!

Indeed, I can safely say that nobody saw that coming. MAD LIONs, the third seed heading into the LEC 2021 Spring Playoffs, are your seasonal champions! Overcoming five other times, including the favourites of Rogue and G2 Esports. Read on as we offer a concise recap of this new era of competitive European League of Legends!

LEC 2021 Playoffs 2021 Recap – A New Era?

Yes, I’ll say it again, this might be a new era for Europe. Accordingly, ever since 2013, only three separate teams have ever claimed a title – namely Fnatic and G2 Esports with one win for Alliance.

This achievement sounds a lot easier than I make it out to be – let’s observe the journey that the champions had to go through to claim this win:

Credits: LEC Twitter
  • Round 1 WB -MAD Lions vs Rogue (3-1) – an essential and incredible win over Rogue in their first game set them up for success. Shocking the community, it seems that MAD Lions were a different beast hungry for the €200,000 and the seed for the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational.
  • Semi-Final WB – G2 Esports vs MAD Lions (1-3) – facing off against the other favourite of the event, MAD Lions once again pulled another victory through thanks to their new rookie signings
  • Grand Final – Rogue vs MAD Lions (3-2) – Rogue go up 2-0 and things are looking dire. What do MAD Lions do? They pull off a legendary reverse sweep the community will be talking about for years to come and become champions!

Despite there being no online crowd, it was incredible. Regardless of whether or not viewers supported them, credit was given and everyone praised the incredible evening of competition.

Let’s see if they can keep up the momentum at next season and at MSI too!

Rogue eliminating Schalke 04 from LEC Spring playoffs

This past weekend we saw another couple of matches in the LEC. This time round we saw Rogue taking down and eliminating Schalke 04 from the LEC Spring Playoffs. Here’s how it all went down:

Rogue eliminating Schalke 04 from LEC Spring playoffs – What happened?

Rogue started the playoffs versus MAD Lions in the upper bracket. They were dropped down to the lower bracket (Round 3) after a 3-1 loss, and matched up against Schalke 04. The first game went toward Rogue, and then Schlake tied it all with a win in the second game. Then in the following matches, Hans Sama’s Kalista was key, as they took them down in the next 2 games to win the series 3-1.

Having Rogue drop down to the losers bracket was something nobody expected, but then again, MAD Lions are quite a solid roster overall. With Fnatic, SK Gaming, and now Schalke out of the way, Rogue have 2 more series to complete in order to be crowned spring split champions.

What’s next?

Their next match up is against the G2 Esports lineup, probably the toughest team out there in the LEC. They will have to take them down on April 10th if they want to secure a spot in the Grand Finals versus MAD Lions. We can expect another intense and action packed series this weekend as we are approaching the final stages of the LEC Spring playoffs.

How to Watch LPL 2021 Spring Playoffs: teams, format, schedule, streams, predictions

Yesterday we gave you viewers the entire breakdown for the LCK Playoffs event coming soon. Luckily, the action doesn’t stop there for competitive League of Legends. Indeed, the LPL 2021 Spring Playoffs will be coinciding, trailing by only a day! Accordingly, read on for another episode of How to Watch here at esportsguide to learn all the essential details you need for a proper viewership experience.

Event Background

In terms of background, the LPL 2021 Spring Playoffs sits as the first playoffs event for the ninth year of competitive LoL in this region. What are teams fighting for? Well, beyond the savory prize pool of ÂĄ 4,200,000, the top 10 teams will be fighting for the single seed available for the MSI 2021 event. Note that top make it here, teams had to fight through the Spring Season for which we’ve provided extensive coverage these past few weeks. Let’s see who’s made the cut, in order of their seed for the event:

Credits: LPL Twitter
  1. RNG
  2. EDward Gaming
  3. Top Esports
  4. JD Gaming
  5. FunPlus Pheonix
  6. Team WE
  7. Suning
  8. Rare Atom
  9. Invictus Gaming
  10. LNG Esports

Running from the 1st April up until the 18th April, the entire event is planned to be held offline thanks to organization managed by TJ Sports.

Format

In terms of format, this is where things get spicy. While other regions such as the LCK resort to a simple single-elimination bracket, the LPL is mixing things up with two phases.

Credits: LPL Twitter

To begin with, phase 1 will involve a couple of King of the Hill single elimination brackets. Competing here will be seeds 3-10 in order to seal a spot in Phase 2 with the remaining two teams. Following phase 1, phase 2 will involve a double elimination bracket, where the final four teams will battle it out in best of five matches. Depending on which half of phase 1 they come out of, the rising two teams will face the first two seeds in epic style. Finally, on the 18th April, we’ll have our grand final and we’ll have our LPL champion.

Schedule for the LPL 2021 Spring Playoffs (CET)

With the latter half of the tournament still a little empty, we’ve decided to provide the schedule of the first few rounds of the competition. Here they are:

Thursday 1st April

  • Rare Atom vs Invictus Gaming (11:00)

Friday 2nd April

Predictions for the LPL 2021 Spring Playoffs

Naturally, predictions will in fact favour Royal Never Give Up and just behind them, EDward Gaming. In addition, both teams concluded their season on an upward swing of a three win-streak. Otherwise, things are a lot less uncertain when it comes to the two teams that will join them for phase 2. A King of The Hill format means that all it takes is a few good showings and you can make it through.

Candidates are likely Top Esports and JD Gaming, who were also dominating the scene last year too, while Suning have seemingly fallen off since Worlds 2020 – still wouldn’t count them out though. This is what makes an event like this more exciting – yes, there are teams that are way more likely to make it far, but nobody can be counted out. Personally, I’m quite a fan of the format the LPL has put forward as it leads to a more unpredictable opening.

Predictions for the LCK 2021 Spring Playoffs

Across the regular season, here at esportsguide we’ve provided weekly updates. Accordingly, it’s only natural to resort to the regular season for predictions.

Let’s start things with the obvious – Dawmon Gaming are the natural event favourites. Yet, are they untouchable?

Top 5 Esports Events 2021
Credits: Riot Games Flickr

No, they definitely aren’t, as the second seed in the form Gen.G proved in Week 9 of the LCK. That win alone made DWG look human and less of an untouchable force to reckon with. Many have it written down that a grand final rematch between Gen.G and DWG to finally settle the score is simply expected – Gen.G is one of the only teas to hand DWG KIA a loss all season long.

However, that’s where the middle of the pack lies, trading blows with one another all season long. Hanwha and T1 especially, have 1-1 records with Gen.G and could easily challenge the second seed if they’re caught off guard. The single elimination bracket format adds to that element of spice – you get one shot

Otherwise, DRX and Nongshim are the underdogs heading into the event, and they’ll give the other teams a fight though not many think they have what it takes to win right now.

CLG parting ways with Griffin

CLG (Counter-Logic Gaming) have announced that they are parting ways with Griffin, one of their members of their League of Legends academy team. Here is their announcement:

CLG parting ways with Griffin – What happened?

Griffin joined CLG back in 2018 as part of their academy team. 7 months after joining, he got promoted to the main lineup of the LCS squad. He helped the team reach 3rd place in the Summer 2019 split, but unfortunately that was their only solid result. After a disappointing ride with the main team, a demotion awaited him back on the Academy roster.

Griffin’s Golden Opportunity

At the start of the season, Griffin had the opportunity to temporarily replace Broxah until his visa got accepted. Despite so much potential, the CLG roster still lacked something which made their performance extremely poor. During Griffin’s stand-in period, the team sat in 9th with a 1-5 score line, having their single win versus the Golden Guardians.

What’s next for Griffin and CLG?

CLG’s Academy team are now trying out Keel as their replacement jungler for the time being. Whereas Griffin is currently looking for a new home, whether it be in an LCS team, or an academy team.

LCK 2021 Spring Week 10 Preview – The Final Week!

Here at esportsguide we’ve been offering consistent and weekly coverage of the LCK. Accordingly, since last year it’s grown as one of the most popular leagues. Indeed, we’re continuing coverage for the LCK 2021 Spring by taking a close look at the final week of the regular season!

LCK 2021 Spring Final Week – What’s At Stake?

Just as a reminder, teams are trying to seed into the Playoffs event shortly. Only the top 6 teams will make it through, while the top two get to sit at the semifinals instantly. Here are the current standings:

lck spring week
Credits: Gamepedia

Bearing in mind the gravity of this upcoming week, we’ve listed some key matches to watch out for which could shape the leaderboard:

  • Fredit BRION vs Hanwha Life Esports – if BRION could win this, it could be huge to lend them a chance forward. Furthermore, Hanwha needs this to contest Gen.G for the second seed
  • Nongshim RedForce vs KT Rolster – probably one of the top match ups of the week as both teams sit at the 6-7th mark desperate to make it through.

  • Nongshim RedForce vs Fredit BRION – again, another battle for seeding which you won’t want to miss

It always boils down to this at the end of the season. While top dog battles are great, it’s the battle in the middle which could make and break the season for these lesser teams.
