Event Background
In terms of background, this event is the sixth iteration of the yearly Champions Cup tournament. Accordingly, this means that the event has taken place every year since 2016.
Similar to other tournaments such as The International, the prize pool has steadily increased each year. For 2021, a prize pool of ¥50,000,000 is live while the Grand Final will be held on August 28th at the National Olympic Center! As you can tell, this year Tencent Games are stepping things up.
In order to participate at this event, only the best Chinese KoG teams have earned a spot. Indeed, all 12 teams will compete at multiple locations in offline environments. Notably, the tournament will move from Shanghai, Nanjing, Chongqing, Qingdao, Wuhan and Beijing at stages in the tournament.

Format
It’s quite a special format for this event, as each stage will be played at a different arena.
To begin with, the Group Stage kicks off on July 28th at Nanjing with the first week of Group Stage. After this, the second week will be played at Chongqing. Here, all 12 teams are placed into two groups to play Single Round Robin.
After 30 matches of BO5 games, the top 4 team from each group will progress to the knockout stage. Here are the groups:
- Group A – AG Super Play, Douyu Gaming, Ghost Owl Gaming, Mighty Tiger Gaming, Rogue Warriors, Talent Gaming
- Group B – eStar Pro, Gank Gaming, Hero JiuJing, QG Happy, TOP Esports, WanZhen Esports Club
Furthermore, comes the Knockout stages at 3 different cities:
- QuarterFinals – August 12-15th – Qingdao
- Semifinals – August 21-22nd – Wuhan
- Grand Finals – August 28th
The Knockout Stage will involve a single-elimination bracket, where each match will be played in a BO7.
