Predictions for the Group Stage

Group A

Group A is definitely one of the most contested group at the event so far, due to the fact that each team has at least a single win. Out of the four, it’s definitely most likely that G2 Esports and Suning will progress. However, following Team Liquid’s surprising win over G2 Esports, it’s less certain as to who’ll take it.

Match to watch: G2 Esports vs Suning

Group B

Over in Group B, things are a little more clear cut. It’s without question that DAMWON Gaming will be progressing following their dominance and that PSG Talon is in the deep end. The second and final seed is more of a question mark though JD Gaming look geared to claim it over Rogue.

Match to watch: Rogue vs JD Gaming

Group C

As we predicted, Group C is certainly the ‘group of death’. Three teams: Fnatic, Gen.G and LGD Gaming. Indeed, LGD Gaming came out of nowhere with an incredible win over Gen.G, though Gen.G and Fnatic are most likely the favourites here.

Match to watch: Fnatic vs Gen.G

Group D

Just like in Group B, Group D offers a more clear-cut winner. Indeed, Top Esports will need no further encouragement to move on. The pressure is on DRX to make it through, with FlyQuest being their main obstacle.

Match to watch: DRX vs FlyQuest

CR4ZY parting ways with all signed rosters

Esports organization CR4ZY has announced that it will be parting ways with all its signed rosters. Here is their announcement:

CR4ZY parting ways with all signed rosters – Why?

CR4ZY will be parting ways with their rosters because of the effect that the pandemic left on the esports community. Due to the current health situation, the organization was not willing to risk the health of their players, and allowed them to go back home in case of a lockdown. This complicated a lot of stuff for the team as it led to players participating in events with severe disadvantages like very high ping and time zone difference.

Here are some words from CR4ZY’s CEO, Antonio Meić:

“We would like to thank all of our players and staff who did an amazing job in really difficult times. Our Dota 2 team secured Top 2 finishes in BTS Pro Series Season 3: Americas and ESL One Birmingham 2020 – Online: North & South America, as well as a multitude of other Top 4 finishes. Our CS:GO team was able to break into the Top 50 teams in the world, while in Rainbow Six: Siege we were just a few steps away from qualifying for the R6 Pro League. In League of Legends, our only regional project, we managed to secure 2nd place in the Esports Balkan League and had our chance in the Play-In stage of EU Masters Summer 2020. Thank you for everything you achieved under the CR4ZY banner.”

What will be CR4ZY’s new focus?

According to their statement, the organization will now be focusing on smaller esports projects and products. This will probably mean that they will be working more on esports content on their youtube channel and maybe involving themselves with smaller esports games.

It’s a very sad thing to see whenever an organization is forced to let go of any of their rosters. Especially when it’s because of the unfortunate situation we are currently in with the pandemic. Hopefully the organization manages to cope in the coming months and regain its strength heading into 2021.

Wildcard teams and their performance at Worlds 2020

Every year at Worlds, teams from non-major regions (EU/NA/CN/KR) are invited to the event, based on their performance during the season. In this article we’ll be covering who the wildcard teams are, and their performance at Worlds 2020.

This year for Worlds 2020 we had the following teams:

Wildcard teams performance – Group Stage

As expected, 2 of the Wildcard teams were the first to go back home as both INTZ and V3 went 1-3 in their group at play-ins. However some of the Wildcard teams stood up to the major regions and performed extremely well. Most notably, PSG Talon & Legacy Esports with an insanely strong run in groups, having PSG placing 1st getting a spot in the next stage and Legacy placing 2nd in group A.

Worlds 2020 Play-In Day 4 Recap

Wildcard teams performance – 2nd Round

In the 2nd round of Play-ins Supermassive matched up versus MAD Lions, where both teams gave their all to keep their Worlds dream alive. The series went the distance as all 5 games were played, and eventually, the turkish lineup came out on top and crushed MAD Lions’ dreams of getting into the next stage. This was extremely shocking, especially since MAD Lions were one of the teams that were expected to have an easy path to the group stage. Despite their great performance, SuperMassive had a crushing defeat versus UOL which meant that they will be representing the CIS in the Worlds 2020 group stage.

On the other side of the bracket we had Rainbow7 which suffered a beating from China’s finest, LGD. LGD Gaming then went on to the finals of the 2nd round versus Legacy and there they had a similar result, wiping out both Latin America & Oceania.

Worlds 2020 Play-in

Are Wildcard teams good?

We’ve already seen that Wildcard teams are not just throwaway teams. And that they are there competing just like the rest of the teams. One of the most memorable wildcard team performances was none other than Albus Nox Luna. This team managed to not only get 2nd place in a very tough group (ROX Tigers, CLG, G2) but end their World Championship run in 5th-8th place. At the 2016 World Championship ANX made history as no other wildcard team had passed through groups before. Not only that, but they are also known as one of the best wildcard teams to ever participate at Worlds.

Interview with Albus Nox Luna Support player Likkrit about Wildcard teams

Wildcard teams may not be as strong as other top regions like Korea or China. But they have always performed at their best in order to make their region proud. Will PSG and UOL keep the dream alive or will it get crushed by the other major regions?

Worlds 2020 Play-In Recap – All Seeds for Main Event

Accordingly, for the past few days, we’ve been offering extensive coverage of the Worlds 2020 PlayIn event. Indeed, with the last day complete, we’ll be taking a look at the final matches, the four confirmed seeds and the groups in full for the main event. Here’s our recap for the Worlds 2020 PlayIn!

Heading into the final day, four teams remained, seeded into the Qualification Round for Worlds 2020. Fighting for the last two spots in the largest esports event in the world, stakes were high. Regardless, two teams managed to come out on top and in dominant style. In fact, both matches concluded in decisive sweeps.

Below, find a glimpse at the entire Knockout Stage:

Worlds 2020 Play-in

Evidently, LGD Gaming from the Chinese region and Unicorns of Love from CIS have claimed the last two seeds. Respectively, both matches weren’t too heavily contested as it was clear as to which team wanted it more. In each match-up, neither team had ever encountered one another before.

With respect to Worlds 2020, LGD Gaming and Unicorns of Love will be joining the two other qualified teams.

Namely, the following four teams fought through the Play-in to claim a seed at Worlds 2020:

  • PSG Talon
  • Team Liquid
  • LGD Gaming
  • Unicorns of Love

Now, all eyes look to the main event. Kicking off on the 3rd October and running up to the 31st, the tournament will begin through a Group Stage. The sixteen teams have been split into four groups of four. Therefore, each seeded team from the Play-In have been placed in their respective group amongst other top competitors.

Groups for Worlds 2020

Officially, the following are the four groups kicking off the main event:

Group A

  • G2 Esports
  • Machi Esports
  • Suning
  • Team Liquid

Group B

  • DAMWON Gaming
  • JD Gaming
  • PSG Talon
  • Rogue

Group C

  • Fnatic
  • Gen.G
  • LGD Gaming
  • Team SoloMid

Group D

  • DRX
  • FlyQuest
  • Top Esports
  • Unicorns of Love

Does Any Play-In Team Stand a Chance?

Do any of the Play-In teams have a chance at making a deep run into the event? Personally, I’d like to think so. All four deserve not to be underestimated following their valiant fight to stay in the tournament. In doing so, they’ve earned a phenomenal amount of practice and momentum heading into the evet – a massive factor in esports.

Immediately in the group stage, one Play-In team with the potential to do some damage is LGD Gaming in Group C. In my opinion, Group C is the least clear-cut from all the other groups. All four teams in this group have had moderately good seasons, with periods of drought interrupted by moments of brilliance. Therefore, I consider them unpredictable – if LGD Gaming can steal a few series, a top contender will go out early.

uolworlds

Otherwise, Unicorns of Love also have a great chance to make some noise. While DRX may be considerd a top dog in the group based on season performance, they’ve been on the downhill since the LCK Playoffs. By catching them off guard, they could steal a win – it won’t be easy though.

All-in-all, the one insight I can confidently offer is that everyone is a threat. No earlier seeded team should count out any Play-In team, but should actually study their performance from this past event to prepare for them better. Worlds 2020 is stacked full of talent, all hungry to cement their names in the history books.

Worlds 2020 Play-In Day 5 Recap – Two Teams Eliminated

We’re slowly reaching the end of our continuous coverage for the Worlds 2020 PlayIn. Indeed, Day 5 marked the Eliminated Round of the event as two more teams head out. Accordingly, 4 teams remain as they contest for the last two seeds available for the Worlds 2020 main event. Read on for another daily recap!

In fact, the Elimination Round involved single-elimination best-of-five matches to determine two teams to progress and two to be disqualified. No second chances here with an entire season on the line.

Here’s how the schedule concluded for Day 5 of the Worlds 2020 Play-In:

  • Rainbow7 vs LGD Gaming (0-3)
  • SuperMassive Esports vs MAD Lions (3-2)

After a poor performance at the event so far, LGD Gaming finally showed up in a big way. On the other hand, the series between SuperMassive Esports and MAD Lions went the distance in epic fashion.

Just like that, only four teams remain in the event, with two games remaining. Here are the match-ups left as yesterday’s winners come up against the Grop’s first seed:

Worlds 2020 Play-In Day 5 Recap
Credits: Liquipedia

MAD Lions falling out early is definitely a massive upset in this regard. Otherwise, SuperMassive esports have an even more difficult task ahead of them through Unicorns of Love. Here, many consider UOL to be the favourite.

On the other side, Legacy Esports seems to be the favourite. However, LGD can potentially steal it with another strong showing. Tomorrow we’ll be offering our final general recap for the event.
