Worlds 2020 Champion Pick rates, Win rates, and Bans

LoL

9 Oct 2020

Nathan Bonello

This year at Worlds 2020, we’ve seen quite a variety when it comes to team compositions and champions picks. In previous years we always saw the same 10-15 champions getting picked, and this resulted in very predictable matches. This year however, a total of 78 different champions were played in the play-in stage.

Play-in Stage

As mentioned above, during the play-in stage we saw 78 different champions on the Summoner’s rift. We saw a lot of varying champions in all roles, even in the jungle role. What about specific statistics like Pick rates, bans and win rates?

Worlds 2020 Champion Pick Rates

Let’s start with the picks first. The most picked champion in the play-in stage was Leona in the support role, and she was picked 18 times. In 2nd, we have good old Graves with 17 picks, and in 3rd we have Lillia with 16 picks. Some other notable mentions are Senna, Sett, Rakan, Ezreal, Camille and Jhin, getting picked 12 times and above.

Ban Rates

With regards to bans, we have Nidalee leading as she was banned a total of 23 times during play-ins. If a champion like Nidalee gets a head-start in a match she can easily snowball matches. So it makes sense that she takes the top spot for bans. Tied in 2nd place are Ornn and Orianna with 22 bans each. With Ornn’s strong utility kit, he is extremely useful in team-fights, so it makes sense to take him out of the game completely. As for Orianna, we know how strong the champion is in both laning phase and team fights, so it makes perfect sense that it was the most banned mid lane champion.

Win Rates

Last but not least, champion win rates. We will not be mentioning champions that had a very high win rate and a low pick rate, as that would defeat the purpose of the demographic. Topping the leaderboard, we have a tie with two of the champions mentioned above, Ornn and Orianna. These 2 champions have a win rate of 91% after getting picked 11 times each. Which is crazy when you think about it because that means that these champions only lost once. Closely behind them is Graves with a 71% win rate over 17 picks. Meshing it altogether, it makes perfect sense that these champions were the most banned after analyzing their win rates.

Group Stage

Now that we’ve gone over the stats in the play-ins, it’s time to move on to the current phase of the event, the Group Stage.

Worlds 2020 Champion Pick Rates

First up, champion Pick rates. Syndra and Graves lead the pack, both having 19 picks during the Group stage (so far). Syndra being such a reliable champion in the midlane with her zoning and insta-kill ultimate is always a great pick to one-shot an enemy champion, so definitely expected to see her being picked the most. Graves on the other hand seems to be a solid pick in the jungle, as we’ve already seen during the play-in stage. With the fast camp clearing tools in the jungle, multiple escape abilities and burst power he is definitely a strong champion and will continue to get picked unless banned during groups.

Ban Rates

Ban wise, we see a new champion emerging in first place as Lucian tops the leaderboard with 22 bans and only 5 picks. Lucian is also another solid option in the midlane with his great wave clearing and poke damage, as well as his mobility so it makes sense to see him getting removed the most. In 2nd we have Twisted Fate, a great champion when it comes to assisting in ganks and cleaning up low HP champions. And finally we see a familiar champion getting banned as Ornn takes 3rd place in the ban rate leaderboard.

Win Rates

Surprisingly, with regards to win rates, we see a familiar champion leading the win rates. Lucian leads the pack with a 100% win rate after getting picked only 5 times out of 27 games. This is definitely the reasoning behind his enormous ban percentage, and further supports the fact that Lucian is currently one of the best mid laners within the current meta.

Weirdly, despite Syndra having the highest pick rate, she is currently suffering in terms of win rate, as she is currently sitting at 32% out of 19 games played. It seems like despite having a low win rate, Syndra is still a reliable champion to pick and that she is not the weakest link within the team composition. Volibear has also been a decent pick with a 57% win rate out of 14 games played. Surely there are better options, such as Ornn, Camille or Renekton; however Volibear seems like he has found his place within the current meta as well.

Overall we can conclude that there are a lot of similarities between the play-in stage and the group stage in statistical terms. Some highlighted champions during Worlds 2020 are:

  • Ornn in the Top Lane
  • Graves in the Jungle
  • Lucian in the Mid Lane
  • Senna in the Bottom Lane
  • Leona as the Support

This year’s League of Legends World Championship is proving to be one of the biggest esports events in history, and we cannot wait to see how it progresses forward. Make sure to keep yourself updated and informed by tuning in to www.esportsguide.com for more Worlds 2020 and esports news!
