Last weekend we saw the conclusion of the LEC and LCS Spring Splits and we were all looking forward to the upcoming international event, the Mid-Season Invitational (commonly known as MSI). Where the top teams of each region verse each other to see which region has the most dominant squad.

However, in a statement released yesterday by the lolesports twitter account, it has been revealed that MSI 2020 has been cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. MSI usually requires these top teams to travel from 1 region to another, and with most countries having travel bans and restrictions this was certainly not going to work out.

Here’s what John Needham, the Global head of esports had to say about the situation:

Even though this announcement has saddenned a lot of League of Legends fans, not all news is bad. In previous MSI events, the result a team would have at the international competition would impact their seeding at the World Championship. However to compensate for the cancellation of the Mid-Season Invitational 2020, Riot will be implementing a couple of changes to the quantity of teams which will represent their region during the World Championship.

Since LPL (China) and the LEC (Europe) are currently ranked first and second, based on their performance in their international competition over the past 2 years, they have been granted that 4 teams will be able to qualify 4 teams for Worlds. VCS (Vietnam) has also been added an other seed to have a total of 2, since they have had great performances as previous Mid-Season Invitationals.

In total these are the final regional seed distributions

LPL (China) – 4 teams
LEC (Europe) 4 teams
LCK (Korea) – 3 teams
LCS (North America) – 3 teams
PCS (Southeast Asia) – 2 teams
VCS (Vietnam) – 2 teams
CBLOL (Brazil) – 1 team
TCL (Turkey)- 1 team
LJL (Japan) – 1 team
LLA (Latin America) – 1 team
OPL (Oceania) – 1 team
LCL (Commonwealth of Independent States) – 1 team

These adjustments will definitely benefit the LPL, LEC and VCS as with these new changes they will have more opportunities to represent the strength of their region. Hopefully the current situation around the world will improve and professional League of Legends will be able to recuperate itself and showcase the beauty of the World Championship.
