In a previous announcement by LoL esports, it was stated that the highly anticipated Mid-Season Invitational will be cancelled for the 2020 season. This was expected, due to the current health situation around the world, but it was still very disappointing to hear.
However Riot Games have come up with a somewhat alternative to MSI with the introduction of the Mid-Season Cup which will feature a couple teams from the LPL and LCK regions. In an announcement that Riot Games has released, it is said that the event will start on the 28th of May with the top four teams from the LPL region (JD Gaming, Top Esports, FunPlus Phoenix, and Invictus gaming) and four teams from the LCK region (T1, Gen.G, DragonX, and DAMWON Gaming).
The event will be held online, having the LCK teams compete in a League of Legends Park in Seoul, and the LPL teams compete in the Shanghai LPL arena. Riot Games have also stated that they will be prioritizing the health and safety of the players and staff by adhering to the local health regulations of both cities and will not feature any live audiences. The prize pool for the event will be a total of $600,000.
Furthermore, Riot Games have also stated that they will be standardizing the ping level to 30-40m/s through the use of third party rules in order to ensure the integrity of competition, and for all teams to have advantages over another. Hence why there haven’t been any international tournaments lately. Luckily enough, these two regions are at very close proximity from each other, which allows an opportunity for international events such as this one.
There will be more news coming soon regarding the Mid-Season Cup, as Riot Games are keeping it as secluded as possible for the time being. So keep an eye out on our website over the coming days to make sure not to miss anything!
