Introduction

PUBG Mobile has taken massive strides as a competitive title this year, pushing forward the PUBG Mobile Pro League, bringing competitive PUBG Mobile to all four corners of the globe in regions such as North America, Africa, Europe, and South Asia following the success the title found last year. Organized by Tencent Games and PUBG Corporation, the PUBG Mobile Pro League – Spring Split 2020: South Asia looks to be the ultimate stepping stone between the Open Qualifiers and the World League Spring 2020 event taking place later on this year.

Knowing what’s at stake, we may take a closer look at all the incredible action which is set to resume the 22nd of May and will be taking place until 14th of June which makes PUBG Mobile the top mobile esport at the time being.

Sadly, one must begin by addressing the elephant in the room which looks to hinder the PlayerUnknown’s Battleground experience – the ongoing outbreak. The organizers have decided, for the safety of everyone involved, to transform the LAN event into an online one, disappointing everyone who’s already bought a ticket. Apart from that, the event was delayed from an earlier date.

Nonetheless, the PMLP South Asia Pro League will retaliate with a high-quality YouTube stream directly from the PUBG Mobile channel, with the loss of a live crowd. Regardless, the competition remains unaffected and as tight as ever.

A total of 20 squads of four will be competing in the PMLP Spring Split 2020: South Asia, all claiming their position in different ways: with various teams either directly qualifying from the Fall 2019 Final Stage (5) or earning their spot through both the PUBG Mobile Club Open India(9) and the PUBG Mobile Club Open South Asia(6).

In both Open Qualifiers, the prevailing teams were placed among a total of 32, fighting their way through a two-week-long format to make it into a top 9 or 5 respectively – coming this far, one can expect that these rosters have eager intentions to make it far into the competition.

Kicking off the much-awaited stage of the PUBG Mobile 2020 calendar, the rosters will first play out a round-robin within their groups, playing several rounds until a top two has been decided from each group. Once that is concluded, the top two teams from each group will merge to form a single register of ten rosters.

Once again, these 10 teams will battle it out for the top five spots, by earning points through position and slaying another, to qualify for the PMWL Spring 2020 – Global Finals. It will be an arduous three-week journey for all the teams involved, where not performing well simply won’t cut it.

Predictions

For the event, many viewers will justly lay their eyes on the roster of TSM-Entity, as Team SoloMid entered a partnership with Entity Gaming only just recently. The roster has just come off a win at the Mafia Cup Season 1 and last year, they won the PUBG Mobile Club Open – Fall Split Global Finals. The other 4 direct invites are all contenders for a top placing, by merit of the fact that they formed the top 5 at the Fall Split – so keep an eye out for Team SouL, SynerGE, Team Insidious and TeamIND too.

However, there’s some serious competition coming from the Open Qualifiers like Fnatic. Furthermore, GodLike dominated the Indian Open Qualifier with two first-place finishes to accumulate the top score of 187 points. Meanwhile, in South Asia, Hype took home the Grand Finals thanks to consistent top 5 placings to garner 144 points. Both of these rosters know what it takes to come out on top and should be considered as serious competition to the favourites on board.

To make it through, it’ll take a certain degree of resilience, which is primarily what we consider for predictions. Certain groups are a touch more obvious, such as Group A being headed by both TSM-Entity and Hype, on the back of an impressive competitive record. Beyond statistical favorites, there are also community favorites in the form of Team SouL, who clearly have the largest backing from the community due to their charismatic players and an undeniably tough play style.

The PMPL South Asia is the PMPL with the largest pool of teams, being 20, and this greater number brings with it an added sense of unpredictability. A plethora of teams, such as the PMCO India winners in Godlike are heading into the event with a question mark over their heads. This couldn’t be more true for a group such as Group D, acting as the self-proclaimed ‘group of death’ with the contenders of Fnatic, TeamIND and Orange Rock all thrown into the same lion’s den. Not a soul remains convinced of the outcome, though an incredible competition may be assured.

There are some big names investing in the PMPL this season, such as TSM and Fnatic, as the best PUBG Mobile teams in the world gather for the event. However, names mean nothing at such an event where everyone has a shot at winning, but some are more likely to do so with many favoring the likes of TSM-Entity, if only slightly.

PUBG Mobile, despite the statistics and figures, always finds some variety on game-day. It all depends on how teams perform on that day, especially with stakes being higher than ever as the PMLP SA – Spring League puts everything on the line. Not qualifying means missing out on half a year of competition.

With that being said, the event is also a testament to the resilience of PUBG Corp in these paranoid times: instead of cancelling the event, it will be played online – the show must go on!
