How To Qualify for the Main Event

The GGBet ICE Challenge 2020 is solely comprised of CS:GO teams from the world elite. All eight participating teams are ranked in the World Top 30, with the tournament headlined by the current world no. 2, mousesports. World no. 7 Natus Vincere is the second-best ranked team, while world no. 14 Ence, and world no. 15 Virtus.pro, are there as well.
All participating teams have qualified due to an invitation from the tournament organizers, with no further qualifications needed. With mousesports at the head of an eight-team lineup, the organizers have created a balanced tournament with a dynamic structure. It should be a lot of fun as the action kicks off February 1 in London.

Tournament Format

The participating teams for the live tournament have been divided into two groups – Group A and B. The structure is a double-elimination format, which means the two teams who suffer two defeats during the Group Stage are eliminated. The remaining six teams qualify for the playoffs set to start on February 4.

CS:GO GGBet Ice Challenge 2020 Group A:

  • Heroic
  • MAD Lions
  • mousesports
  • Virtus.pro

CS:GO GGBet Ice Challenge 2020 Group B:

  • ENCE
  • GODSENT
  • Natus Vincere
  • OG

All fixtures during the Group Stage are played as Best of 3. The two group winners will qualify directly for the tournament’s Semifinals, whereas the runner-ups advance to the quarterfinals as the higher seed. The lower seeds in the quarterfinals are occupied by the 3rd-placed teams in each group.
With the playoff teams decided, the CS:GO tournament turns to a single-elimination bracket structure. It remains a Best of 3 tournaments until the Grand Final where the format is changed to Best of 5. The Grand Final is scheduled for February 6 and takes place at the ExCel Venue in London, where all the playoff matches will be broadcasted from.

Predictions

Last year’s GGBet Ice Challenge was a four-team tournament with a combined prize pool of $50.000. In 2020, the number of teams has doubled while the prize money has increased fivefold. That makes this year’s CS:GO tournament an entirely different story.
mousesports enters the tournament as the overarching favorite, but the field is generally a strong one. There are no teams from outside the World Rankings Top 30, which speaks volumes to the competitiveness of all teams. We can’t escape the fact that mousesports are the favorites, but the fast-paced tournament structure, with only a two-game Group Stage, could open up for surprises along the way.
