G2 Sweep NRG in the Rocket League Spring Series

News

29 Apr 2020

The Rocket League Spring Series has come to an end and G2 has come out victorious over NRG after a clean 4-0 sweep.

Final Standings + Winnings

  • 1st – G2 Esports – $23,000
  • 2nd – NRG Esports – $17,000
  • 3rd – Rogue – $16,000
  • 4th – Spacestation Gaming – $15,000
  • 5th/6th – Pittsburgh Knights – $14,000
  • 5th/6th – Team Envy – $14,000
  • 7th/8th – Charlotte Phoenix – $13,000
  • 7th/8th – 72 Pin Connector – $13,000

How did they do it?

G2 were invited to the Spring series due to them being in the top 4 of NA RLCS. Their first match was versus Rogue in the Quarterfinals, which gave them no trouble at all ending the best of 5 series with a 3-0 scoreline. Next came the SemiFinals versus Envy, which recently picked up the ex-Ghost roster, Vanguard. The match ended in a 3-1 score favoring G2, and next up was the Winners’ Finals which meant that they were up against their rivals, NRG Esports in a best of 7. NRG won the first 2 games pretty easily, but G2 came back with a crushing performance as they ended the series with a 4-2 scoreline. G2 then proceeded to the Grand Finals where they would re-match versus NRG

However Since G2 never dropped down to the lower bracket, they had a 1 game advantage off the bat and continued their stomp in the matches that followed. This wasn’t just 1 lucky series, or a course of lucky matches. G2 have successfully found a playstyle that directly counters what NRG are exceptional at, which is, having complete control of the match, creating opportunities for great goals and passes. G2’s aggressiveness forced the ball to be in NRG’s own half the majority of the time and that made it easier for JKnaps to create opportunities for him and his teammates to score.

Upcoming Rocket League events

Having the current pandemic affecting international competition due to travel bans meant that the World Championship had to get cancelled. This means that North American Competition will be taking a small break for now whilst the Oceanic region will be getting some action next weekend with the Spring series. Competitive Rocket League will also return in Europe with the Spring series on the 9th-10th of May.

Will we see the same dominance from Dignitas as we’ve seen in the regular season of season 9? Or will we witness some crazy upsets as was presented in the North American RLCS?
