EVO Online Announced – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Dropped

News

26 May 2020

Gabriel Sciberras

The Evolution Championship Series, or EVO, is the most iconic fighting game event of every year, where the best in the world battle it out across multiple titles to figure out who truly is the best fighter in the whole world. Unfortunately, due to the situation of the world, the entire event has transitioned to an online format with different dates: what’s more concerning is the fate of Super Smash Bros which will no longer be at the event.

The competitive fighting genre in esports is one of the most intense scenes due to its dependency on frame data and precise timing. Due to this, going online would require an impeccable net code. The newly formed five-week event of EVO Online, with a heavy heart, was forced to drop Super Smash Bro due to its notoriously unreliable network. The other games hosted have their own situations: either using delay-based or rollback netcode solutions.

  • Dragon Ball FighterZ
  • Granblue Fantasy Versus
  • Samurai Showdown
  • Soulcalibur 6
  • Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition
  • Tekken 7
  • Under Night In-Birth
  • Killer Instinct
  • Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath
  • Skullgirls 2nd Encore
  • Them’s Fightin’ Hers

Running from 4th July to the 2nd August, the Smash community is rather saddened by the announcement though completely understanding. Everybody understands that quality competition would not have been possible and this is where everyone looks to Nintendo to fix this.

What events are there for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans after this loss?

Well, there’s still a tonne to enjoy this year through the Smash World Tour 2020 for both Bros. Ultimate and Bros. Melee, as multiple events are lined up for the remainder of the event. It’s an exhaustive list, but examples include the following:

  • Super Smash Con 2020
  • Collision 2020
  • Standoff 2020
  • Smash Dream Cup
  • CEO 2020
  • Apex 2020

This is definitely not the end for Smash Bros. Ultimate, but the title is a noticeable absence from EVO Online.
