CSGO IEM Katowice 2020 Recap – Natus Vincere “Veni, Vidi, Vici”

News

2 Mar 2020

Nathan Bonello

IEM Katowice 2020 has finally concluded and Natus Vincere are crowned champions after a clean 3-0 versus G2 at the Spodek Arena. Na’Vi had an unbelievable run all throughout the tournament, and with their newest addition Ilya “Perfecto” Zalutskiy they seemed unbeatable. In addition to this, Aleksandr ‘s1mple’ Kostyliev was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of IEM Katowice 2020. Here you can find the CSGO IEM Katowice 2020 Recap explaining the outcome of the event.

Final standings for the tournament and their winnings

  • 1st Natus Vincere – $250,000
  • 2nd G2 esports – $100,000
  • 3rd Astralis – $40,000
  • 4th Fnatic – $40,000
  • 5th 100 Thieves – $15,000
  • 6th Team Liquid – $15,000

How did they do it?

Natus Vincere acquired Ilya “Perfecto” Zalutskiy from Syman Gaming on the 24th of January and they have already done some incredible things since then. From the time of the roster change they have played a total of 38 maps and won 27 of them, which is very impressive as the whole team had to adapt to a new style, since removing their main awper Ladislav “GuardiaN” Kovács.

One of the most impressive things that Na’Vi has done all throughout the tournament was that they had incredible starts to their matches, and that led to them having a very good half which eventually resulted into them winning most matches.

For example, in the semi-final versus Astralis on the 1st map, they ended the 1st half with a score of 14-1, and on the 2nd map, they ended the 1st half with a score of 13-2. The same thing happened in the Grand Finals of Katowice versus G2. The 1st and 3rd Map of the best of 5 had both halves end with a score of 14-1 favoring Natus Vincere. In all, Na’Vi won 14 maps out of the 18 maps they played, and only lost 1 series to Fnatic during the group stage.

Tournament statistics

Unfortunately, due to Coronavirus concerns, the Silesian Governor ordered that the Spodek arena remain empty, even though the decision was made at a time where there were no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Poland. This was very sad news, especially for Michal “Carmac” Blicharz (VP Pro Gaming at ESL) which is responsible for running IEM to tell all the Counter Strike fans that they are unable to enter the arena. Despite this disappointing news, the live stream peaked at 1,002,132 viewers over 66 hours of air-time.

Short clip of Carmac explaining the situation:

G2’s astonishing run in Katowice

Even though Natus Vincere was triumphant in winning Katowice, they weren’t the only ones to put on an excellent show. G2 was solid the whole way through leading to the finals, beating the likes of 100 Thieves, Mousesports, Team Liquid in the group stages and Fnatic in the Semi-Finals. If we do not include their performance in the Grand Finals vs Na’Vi, G2 has only dropped 2 maps and won 8 maps in total. Even though their final performance was very poor, we should not count them out in future events as they have played against a very fierce Natus Vincere and G2 will take this loss as a lesson for their upcoming tournaments. Where do we go from now?

Na’Vi’s performance this year has been extraordinary, to say the least. They have had better performances versus the top teams in comparison to last year, and with their newest addition, they have shown that they will have a very exciting 2020. The next even for Na’Vi and G2 will be ESL Pro League Season 11 and it is sure to be a great event as the team line up is quite similar to the line up we had at IEM Katowice. However, the question is, will we be seeing Natus Vincere and G2 dominate once again? Or will their performance at Katowice fluke and allow teams like Astralis, Mousesports, Fnatic, and FaZe Surpass them? Stay tuned on esportsguide.com to not miss any event!
