News

Earlier this month, certain images were leaked regarding a potential esports framework for the up-and-coming mobile title of Call of Duty: Mobile, though nothing could be confirmed. Gladly, Activision have finally announced the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship 2020in partnership with Sony – offering a prize of $1 million. Read on for all the details.

Everything will kick off as soon as April 30th, with the first stage of competition. From April 30th-May 24th, an online qualifier will take place: allowing any player ranked veteran or higher in-game to participate under the following parameters:

  • For four weekends, each player will have to play 10 ranked matches to earn tournament points
  • Points are based on wins corresponding to rank
  • A threshold of 80 points is present: if this is hit within the first 10 ranked matches of a weekend, you’ve qualified to Stage 2.
  • Players cannot use external devices or desktop emulators

So what is there to compete for?

Stage 1 will offer players in-game cosmetics and rewards, together with the coveted qualification for Stage 2.

What happens for Stage 2 and onwards?

We don’t know – up until now, only Stage 1 has been revealed to the community, with updates promised for the future. What has been confirmed is that Stage 2 will involve teams of those qualified – a hint at squads to get practicing.

It’s delightful to witness the birth of a new esports scene, especially another mobile title. Activision certainly seems hesitant, as perhaps they’re unsure as to how many players will show up. However, with how popular the mobile title has been, the ceiling seems very high for the esport.

For now, only online competition has been confirmed, but with a $1 million dollar prize pool, one can expect an epic LAN event as soon as it’s possible to host.

Breaking records thanks to 100 million downloads in its first week, the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship 2020 will be one to watch.
