LCK 2020 Spring Season Recap – A Three Horse Race

News

The 2020 Spring Season of League Champions Korea just concluded a couple of days ago on the 16th of April after starting on the 5th of February. Following 2 months of incredible competition, the top 5 have moved on to the Playoffs which will be live momentarily. Let’s take a quick look at the past two months of League of Legends competitive play with the 2020 LCK Spring Season recap!

The LCK 2020 Spring Season involved 10 invited teams from the LCK, namely the following listed per ranking:

  • Gen.G
  • T1
  • DragonX
  • KT Rolster
  • DAMWON Gaming
  • Afreeca Freecs
  • APK Prince
  • Hanwha Life
  • SANDBOX Gaming
  • Griffin

Nine weeks, a double round-robin and two months have determined the top 5 teams who are heading to the Spring Playoffs. Heading into it, a close eye was fixed on the favourites of Gen.G and T1, though the competition was hot on their heels. A first-place finish would land a playoff bye to the Final while second and third would springboard to Round 3 and 2 respectively at the Playoffs.

Apart from the prizes at stake, a penalty was present two – with the bottom two teams sentenced to relegation, playing at the LCK Summer Promotion.

Without further delay, we can take a closer look at the top 5 in what seems to be one of the closest finishes ever for a season of League of Legends in the LCK.

The Top 3 – Separated by Win Percentage

Until the final and ninth week of competition, no clear winner stood out. Gen.G and Dragon.X were constantly shifting between second and third while T1 consistently stole second place. Surprisingly no tie-breakers were required to conclude the standings as finalised below:

  1. Gen.G          14-4 (S)     31-30(G)
  2. T1                 14-4 (S)     30-14(G)
  3. DragonX     14-4 (S)     31-15(G)

Dragons, halfway into the season, pulled off an incredible seven-win streak to solidify their spot into the Playoffs. In terms of how these teams match up against one another, there are some interesting findings to discuss:

  • T1 defeated both Gen.G and DragonX twice with overall 4-2 and 4-1 scorelines respectively
  • Meanwhile, Gen.G and DragonX traded with one another (1-1) and both lost to T1

All offer identical win percentages: T1 was seemingly losing more maps to lesser teams compared to Gen.G and DragonX, but when it came to facing their greatest opposition they handled them with ease.

So who’s most likely to take home the Playoffs?

From what’s been stated about the LCK 2020 Spring Season, although Gen.G may be statistically on top, the edge certainly goes to T1 as it’s understood that a winner will be determined between this top 3.

Further Down – 4th and 5th

The LCK 2020 Spring Season was certainly a three=horse race for the top – but what about fifth? Surely there was a similar competition to enter Playoffs?

Unfortunately, not really. The margin between 5th and 6th is rather clear-cut, with no tiebreakers required. Fifth place was secured by DAMWON Gaming for seven of the nine weeks, while KT Rolster rose to 4th within the final 3 weeks.

With the LCK 2020 Spring Playoffs underway, it’ll be thrilling to see which team rises to the top of the LCK.
