Introduction

Right out the blue, announced only at the start of March, the Dota Summit 12 is upon us; placing $150,000 of prize as a major event within the Dota 2 Pro Circuit 2020. A yearly staple event within the Dota 2 community, doubts were circulating over whether it would be held to the viral state of certain regions, but no, it’ll certainly be taking place at the BTS studios in Los Angeles, California from the 10th to the 13th of March and we’ve gathered all the details you should know of.

While the previous ‘The Summit” (11) kicked off the Dota 2 Pro Circuit 2019/20 with eight teams and a larger prize pool, the stakes are slightly lower for this iteration of the event. Showcasing some of the top Dota 2 rosters in the entire world, six teams have been directly invited, with no qualification involved, in order to battle it out over three arduous days of competition, namely:

  • Evil Geniuses
  • Fnatic
  • OG Seed
  • Team Liquid
  • Thunder Predator
  • Cloud9

Format and Schedule

While no points for the Dota Pro Circuit may be on the line, there’s certainly a lot to play for. The six-invited teams will have to perform across two stages of competition: the Group Stage and the Playoffs.

The Group Stage will consist of a single group-of-six sorting out their differences through a round-robin format, hurrying things up with each game being a best-of-2. After each and every roster has encountered one another, the top four teams will move on to the Playoffs while the bottom two will be eliminated.

Playoffs will offer a usual double-elimination, where each match besides the Grand final will be Bo3 whereas the grand final will be sorted out in a Bo5.

Predictions

Before making any predictions, we can take a look at the current Dota 2 Pro Circuit rankings for each of the six teams.

  • Evil Geniuses (4th)

Placing second at DreamHack Season 13 to earn 3,000 DPC Points and first at  ESL One Los Angeles 2020  for a further 100 points, they sit at fourth place overall, with 4950, in the entire Dota Pro Circuit. Hence, statistically, they are the heavy favourites heading into this event as they’ve shown the most promise as a team and stacked up against the other invited competition, look to easily take many victories leading up to the event win.

  • Team Liquid (7th)

Further down in the ranking, nonetheless in the top 12 is Team Liquid. At the moment, they’re sitting at 1820 points thanks to 5-6th placings at both the MDL Chengdy Major and DreamLeague Season 13: The Leipzig Major. Overall, they’re a solid team; not the strongest attending the event, though they certainly have upset potential when encountering Evil Geniuses. Expect them to place second.

  • Fnatic (11th)

Attending the same events as Team Liquid has so far in the Dota 2 Pro Circuit, mentioned above; only placing 7th-8th and lower in both instances. The third favourite team for the event, they’ll have to play at their best in order to have a chance, though it’s very likely that they’ll make it to Playoffs.

  • Thunder Predator (27th), OG Seed (63rd)

Both Thunder Predator and OG. Seed find themselves amongst the ranks of the Dota 2 Pro Circuit, with Thunder Predator sitting slightly higher with 100 points thanks to a strong showing at ESL One Los Angeles 2020. Meanwhile, the OG Seed, (OG’s secondary roster) hold on to 10 points earned from the ESL One LA Qualifier.

Expectations aren’t very high for the two teams, however, The Dota Summit 12 should serve as some great practice to allow them to improve as individual teams. The two teams are likely to end up at the bottom of the group.

  • Cloud9 (N/A)

The wildcard of the event, nobody knows what to expect from Cloud9. Announcing a return to Dota 2 at the beginning of 2020, Cloud9 introduced a new roster on the 29th of January. Due to this, the roster isn’t part of the 19/20 Pro Circuit. With some world-champions such as Ace” and “Sneyking” on the roster; this level of unpredictability could pose a threat to the established rosters attending the event.

Predictions for this roster are blank as it’ll be their first performance together as a team on LAN.

To conclude, the Dota 2 Summit 12 looks to be an incredible event. Offering a tight mix of favourites, underdogs and a wildcard, expect some great competition come March 10th, all the way to the 13th, where one team will enjoy the majority of $150,000.
