Following the conclusion of the 2020 LCS Spring Season, which concluded on the 29th of March, the top six teams from the double round-robin are now headed to the 2020 LCS Spring Playoffs. Organized by Riot Games on a newly formed and functional online platform, the LCS will not be deterred by the ongoing pandemic.

Apart from pride and an unconfirmed prize pool, these 6 top North American LCS rosters will also be competing for a qualification spot into the 2020 Mid-Season Invitational. Do note that the usual MVP Award will also be bestowed upon any noteworthy once again, readers will be reminded that the event will be online; so there won’t be any trophy hoisting or crowd chanting.

Format and Schedule

The 2020 LCS Spring Playoffs, for its third year, will be sticking to a familiar double-elimination bracket. The top 4 will be starting in the Winners’ bracket while 5th and 6th will lurk in the Losers’ bracket for incoming opponents. The first seed, that is, Cloud9, could have chosen between the third (100 Thieves) and fourth seed (FlyQuest) as their competitor right off the bat, while the other will face the second seed.

Within the double-elimination bracket, all matches will be a best-of-five and fortunately, at the same time every day precisely as outlined in the schedule below.

With regards to the schedule, bearing in mind the number of teams at the event, it’s hardly overcomplicated and therefore, we’ve included all of it below for reference during the event:

Predictions

The LCS 2020 Spring Regular Season is definitely the greatest source of insight to figure out how these teams stack up. To shake things up from the usual predictions in this section, I’ll be sorting the teams into tiers based on their performance and any related achievement.

Tier 1 – Cloud9 (17-1)

During the regular Spring Season, Cloud9 was ruthless, winning 17 out of the 18 maps they played – that’s just insane. Sweeping aside everybody except TSM, who somehow managed to steal a map in their last series, it’s safe to say that with a 94% map win and an 8 win streak, things are looking good for the boys in light blue.  Usually contested locally by Team Liquid, who failed miserably in the regular season, and following a disappointing 9-12th place at Worlds 2019, Cloud9 is hungry for validation and seem simply unstoppable.

Switching some roles internally at the start of the year, Cloud9 is the undeniable favourite for the event who should take it all home. They did choose 100Thieves as their opening opponent over FlyQuest.

Tier 2 – Evil Geniuses, 100 Thieves and FlyQuest (10-8)

With all of these teams finishing dead square, tie-breakers had to split them apart. Within the tiebreakers, they stacked up as portrayed in the qualification listings above. Nonetheless, expect these three to be at each other’s throats to determine a highly indecisive second-place spot. It’s highly doubtful that any of them will be able to deny Cloud9 a victory here.

Tier 3 – Team SoloMid (9-9) and Golden Guardians (8-10)

Finishing just under the three above, I wouldn’t count these two out of the competition and necessarily finishing last. On many occasions throughout the regular season, these two have stolen maps off of the others, most notably TSM taking the only one off of Cloud9. However, they do appear to be the weaker teams in this situation, if only slightly, and from the getgo will have to work the hardest to have a chance at a podium finish.

And that’s that – we hope you all enjoy the LCS 2020 Spring Playoffs from the comfort of home!
