How to watch Frostbite 2020: Event, schedule, and stream.

News

Frostbite 2020 takes place this weekend and it is one of the most unique events of the year and it is not one you want to miss out on. The concept of the tournament revolves around one of the most iconic of video game characters – the mushroom-eating, box-smashing, coin-grabbing Italian plumber, Mario, and co. in one of the oldest and most enjoyed games in the Nintendo repertoire, Super Smash Bros. This is essentially the game with a fighting-specific genre of the Mario series and is a version of the game which allows crossovers. This means that as well as those from the Mario series, you also get a good selection of characters from across the Nintendo Universe.

The game which first launched back in 1999 has become a cult classic, however, Frostbite 2020 revolves around the most modern version of the game, Super Smash Bros Ultimate. This version of the game is, of course, the most fine-tuned of all the versions of the game in the series and popularity remains at fever pitch – hence why the Frostbite 2020 is such a popular event. This tournament, which is one of the only ones endorsed by Nintendo themselves, will be celebrating its 5th year and we cannot wait to catch the Super Smash Bros Ultimate action as it happens this weekend. Let’s take a look at what you need to know.

How to Qualify for the Main Event

Frostbite 2020 works as an open so if players want to compete in it then it was merely a matter of pre-registering and then paying a fee that will be reflective of the Super Smash Bros disciplines you wish to participate in. These prices are actually pretty reasonable at just $10 except for the doubles which are $20, so works out as $10 each. The only pre-requisite is that players need to have to pre-registered – the deadline for which is well over and so those who are attending are as good as set in stone. However, the details of who exactly will be there this are not known yet as due to the open nature of the tournament it is essentially who makes it on the day- although there have been a few pre-determined notable entrants.

Tournament format

Over the course of the weekend, the Frostbite 2020 will cover 5 disciplines found in the Smash Bro Ultimate Super Smash Bros. These are as follows:

  • Ultimate 1v1 Singles
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 2v2 Doubles
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Squad Strike
  • Rivals of Aether 1v1 Singles
  • Rivals of Aether 2v2 Doubles

Most of these will breakdown in a format whereby the competition will begin with a pools round, this will then be followed by a semi-final bracket and then accumulating in the Final 8 over the course of the Saturday and Saturday. While this is certainly the case for the two single-player game modes mentioned above, the team events might work slightly differently as they mostly will be taking place over the course of one day of the event but will follow a similar formula.

List of Teams

There will not be any teams, per se, in this tournament, as it is, for the most part, a singles event. However, there will be some solo appearances in the frostbite brackets from players in the esports community who are known from teams. These include Most Valuable Gaming, Team Liquid, Rogue, EUnited, Spacestation, and Ray Road Gaming, with the latter being the most represented of all the teams in the e-sport community.
